How to Connect a Breathing Circuit - A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Connect a Breathing Circuit: Step-by-Step Guide
- Breathing Circuit Components:
- Identify the breathing circuit components: one end for connecting to the animal and the other end for connecting to the absorber.
- Handle with Care:
- Handle the breathing circuit carefully, avoiding dropping it on the ground or bending it to keep it in good shape.
- Connecting to the Animal:
- Hold the end of the breathing circuit meant for connecting to the animal.
- Perform gentle pushing and wiggling motions to attach the circuit to the animal's airway.
- Ensuring Proper Connection:
- Feel for the sensation of the metal parts of the circuit hooking together. This indicates that the connection is secure.
- Patient Setup:
- Position the patient's breathing bag or the animal itself in readiness for connection.
- Connecting to Patient:
- Attach the connected breathing circuit to the patient's airway or breathing bag.
- Pressure Measurement:
- Locate the lower fitting on the circuit designed for pressure measurement.
- Attach the fitting to measure the pressure in the breathing circuit.
- Completing Setup:
- Ensure that all components are securely connected and in place.
- Ventilator Activation:
- Start the ventilator to initiate the airflow through the circuit.
- Monitoring the Setup:
- Observe the bellows on the breathing circuit for movement.
- Watch the animal's lung go up and down in response to the ventilator's action.
- Tracheal Tube Connection:
- On the opposite side of the connection, you'll find a long tracheal tube.
- Connect this tube to the animal's airway to complete the circuit.
- Setup Verification:
- Double-check all connections to ensure they are secure and functioning properly.
